Bless your ears with the official Khruangbin playlist companion for Khruangbin’s Nostalgia Mixtape episode. Listen on Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal. The band has famously covered psychedelic rock songs from India to the Middle East, and in their episode they tell host Sama’an Ashrawi many stories about hunting down records while traveling the globe.

The episode’s jumping off point is France Joli’s “Gonna Get Over You.” She’d end up working with Giorgio Moroder and George Duke on the strength of this song, but was never able to repeat its success. It is a GREAT disco song.

“Let Love Flow On” by Jamaican soul singer Sonya Spence is a delicate springtime love song with horns that sound like a happier version of Outkast’s “Spottieottiedopaliscious.”

Khruangbin went to great lengths in Mumbai to get ahold of vinyl copies of two Bollywood soundtracks from the 80s, one being ‘Janbaaz’ and the other being ‘Qurbani.’ From Qurbani, “Aap Jaisa Joi” was apparently the big hit, but “Laila O Laila” is the real banger.

From Tehran, Iran, “Gole Yakh” by Kouroush Yaghmaei translates to “Ice Flower” and is an incredibly sad song about losing love, and losing  youth. Kanye sampled this track in 2018. Laura Lee found this record in Thailand at iconic record store ZudRangMa. 

The craziest find of all is Jim Sullivan’s “U.F.O.” Jim’s story is wild. On this album he sang  about desert highways, a man who goes missing, and mystical shit like UFOs and the Sandman and time travel. Several years later, on a drive from LA to Nashville, he wound up vanishing in the desert. The album is a fantastic slice of Americana, but with eerie undertones made spookier by the album’s own unfortunate prophecy.
